So Capcom has released the online beta of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix with Commando 3: Wolf on the Battlefield. I’ve heard mixed reviews about beta from the fighting game community over on Shoryuken forums. There were complaints about the netcoding, but that is the reason Capcom decided to release the beta, to test the netcoding. We fighting game fans can only wait and trust Capcom will fix every bug they’ve acknowledged since they have decided they are not releasing another beta.
The reasons being that first off it costs too much for them and secondly it would take away from the purpose of the beta, which is to find bugs. We can only hope that Capcom is reading the various forums intently because total lockouts, lag, and network issues will not cut it when the final version of this highly anticipated remake hits the Xbox Live Arcade. I personally trust Capcom with this because they do not want SSF2T HD Remix to fail and turn people away from Street Fighter 4. They will delay this game as long as need be to get it right. SF4 is a big gamble for them considering the dwindling market for fighting games, so they want this game to be so good that people will be drooling in anticipation for Street Fighter 4.
Lastly people seem to forget that this is only a beta so glitches, bugs and inconsistencies are meant to be found here so that they don’t appear in the final version of the game. Just because they released it to the public this does not make the definition of beta not apply. David Sirlin one of the bigshots working on this game who happens to also be one of the all time greats, competing in national tournaments for the original Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo back in 1992, has a blog that he updates when he wants to about the progress of HDRemix on Capcom’s website. With the amount of months put into this game, his familiarity with what makes a good fighting game and the amount of delays, I can’t imagine him or anyone at Capcom allowing this game to fail.
