The complaint heard around the world was and is American PlayStation 3 owners in a fuss over having next to no RPGs on the Sony powerhouse. The Role Playing genre was once prominent on past Sony consoles, confusion arose when Japanese RPG developers decided to reinforce the Xbox 360 gaming catalog. In the shuffle of everything I suppose people forgot that while the PlayStation 3 is not as stacked as the PlayStation 2, the current Role Playing content is some of the best, dare I say it, in the history of gaming.
Rpgs such as Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles, and Eternal Sonata are definitely in the Top 5 RPGs this generation and all of them are on the PlayStation 3, not to downplay any of the great RPGs on the 360 such as Star Ocean 4, Lost Odyssey, and Blue Dragon are all great, but game play wise, in comparison to the universal acclaim of Disgaea 3 or Valkyria Chronicles? I don’t think they stack up. One must also not forget the RPGs of the future, Final Fantasy XIII, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5, Cross Edge and White Knight Chronicles.
So while the PS3 may not be on par with the PS2 in terms of quantity of RPGs, it certainly more than matches the quality. Gamers should do more research on their favorite consoles and keep an open mind to certain franchises they haven’t tried or new IPs before complaining that whichever console lacks a certain type of game or online function.

Thanks for making the text almost impossible to read without highlighting…
Did you let the site load completely? It does that sometimes and the off white color doesn’t load over the brown.
Just refresh, grumpy.
hehe I’m not that grumpy.
I did refresh, it’s just black text on a brown background here.
Thanks though!
And once again Folklore gets forgotten. While not a traditional JRPG it’s a great game. It’s really sad that it launched with the system and was all but forgotten shortly thereafter.
I dont care what people say or what console you own; Any true RPG fan needs to play Valkyria Chronicles. To me, easily the best RPG this generation thus far.
I personally didn’t like Folklore at all…
but hopefully White Knight Chronicles joins the list of blue chip RPG’s this generation as I have been waiting patiently for it…
It’s funny how people count 3 PS3 games and talking about their quality, while one of the 3 (Eternal Sonata) came out first on the X360. Just like the excellent tales of Vesperia which is not even out yet on the PS3 (and has a much wider universal acclaim than Disgaea 3).
And that’s without even paying attention to western RPGs like Mass Effect 2 and Fable 2 – everything else in this list simply pales in comparison with those two.
That gives the X360 the edge in BOT quantity AND quality. I’ll take that any day of the week. But neither console still matches the number of quality titles on the PS2, simply because they’re not out for that long.
I disagree Guy, I think Valkyria Chronicles is the best RPG this generation…
In response to Guy, Tales of Vesperia comes from Bandai/Namco, not to be that guy, but you realize Namco is much more widely known than NIS.
There are actually 7 RPGs in the post its just that only 4 are out, considering that the PS3 has only been out 3 years, that’s not really bad, especially with Microsoft actually being a challenge to them this generation.
P.S the PS3 version of version of Eternal Sonata has exclusive extras that actually make it better than the 360 version, so yes the PS3 and the Xbox 360 both have some great RPGs but PS3 has Valkyria Chronicles and is followed by some great runners up, the 360 has a bunch of great ones, but they also have stuff like Enchanted Arms.
Quality vs. Quantity sir
NIS is Nippon Ichi Software not Namco. NIS has given dozens of great JRPG’s including Disgaea and Atelier Iris. Namco is responsible for the Tales series as well as Eterna Sonata.
@Vicioustale Williams
I’m trying to see what point you’re making when you mention the X360 has games like Enchanted Arms.
First, because I believe nobody really cares about this game. There is a big enough list of Quality RPG games without it on the X360, so the “quality and quantity” argument still holds.
Second, because Enchanted Arms is also a PS3 title, so this makes your entire point completely irrelevant.
As for NIS Vs Namco. It doesn’t matter which company is more well known in the US. Disgaea holds a metacritic average of 79, while Tales of Vesperia has an average of 82, which is not much higher (so perhaps it was a bad use of this word on my side) but still higher.
One is entitled for a personal opinion: Don for example thinks VC is the best RPG this generation (don’t know if he played them all, but still) and he doesn’t like Folklore at all.
But the general consensus of reviewers shows that RPG games like Mass Effect and Fable 2 are considered to be better by most of them, and I believe it will be hard for someone to argue that these games are no good. That’s quality and quantity.
That’s even without listing RPG games of the future for the X360 (I only see PS3 games mentioned in this article): Risen, Divinity 2, Magna Carta 2, NNN2, Rumored Losy Oddysey 2, Mass Effect 2 and a few others. I can put my money that at least 2 of these titles will be high quality titles (with ME2 leading the pack).
@Guy..
I haven’t played Mass Effect …but I don’t consider Fable 2 a RPG…
I consider Fable 2 an action/adventure game with RPG elements…
also….from the impression that I got from Mass Effect is that it’s pretty much in the same category as fable 2…
because if that were the case…you can make just about any game that allows you to upgrade powers an RPG…we go over that at the end of this weeks podcast….there was a huge RPG discussion…
Sony needs to start throwing their money around like Micro$oft does as RPGs are the cornerstone of the Playstation brand (much like FPS’s are for XBox). So tired of all of these FPS’s on the PS3. They are boring and mostly interchangeable.
As for RPGs, in the case of Star Ocean and Magna Carta, most XBox owners do not care and dislike the art style… I love JRPGs but was bored to tears with Eternal Sonata and Folklore. Valkyria Chronicles and Disgaea 3 were great but I need more. Just tired of game companies ignoring their fan bases at the mere whiff of the all mighty dollar. I have nothing against multi-plats, but exclusives (especially ship jumpers) are frustrating.
